CAREER PORTFOLIO INFO

Parents,

The students at Porter Elementary have been learning about the Georgia Career Clusters. Exposing children to career possibilities at an early age enables them to see the connection between what they are learning in school and what people are doing in the "real world." In addition to completing career lessons, the Georgia Department of Education is requiring all fifth grade students to complete a 5th Grade Career Portfolio Project consisting of an essay and presentation/display of their chosen career interest.

The essay should include the following topics:

  • Introduction
  • Training and education
  • Work environment, salary and job growth
  • Why the student chose that career.

Your student will participate in five sessions with the counselor on creating the 5th grade Career Portfolio Project. In the first session, the students will complete a career interest profiler which will identify strengths that are associated with particular careers cluster areas. The students were responsible for narrowing down their choices to two careers of interest. In the second session, students will be taught how to conduct the research for their career and began working on their research outline. The remaining sessions will focus solely on gathering research for completing the project board and typing the essay. Students are expected to continue to work on their projects at home. The Career Portfolio Project is due May 1, 2017. The Career Portfolio Project will count as an English/Language Arts grade and will be calculated into their overall average.
